Victorian 9ct Gold Mizpah Locket
Victorian 9ct Gold Mizpah Locket
A beautiful late Victorian Mizpah locket, rich with the romantic symbolism so characteristic of sentimental jewelry from the era.
The front is intricately decorated with raised engraving surrounding the word MIZPAH, while the reverse features ornate ivy leaves — a traditional Victorian symbol of attachment, fidelity and “clinging” love.
Mizpah jewelry became especially popular in the mid- to late-19th century and was often exchanged between loved ones facing a period of separation. The word comes from Genesis 31:49: “The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.” It became a deeply sentimental expression of love, remembrance and protection across distance.
The locket is crafted in 9ct gold back and front, meaning the visible front and back are 9ct gold with an internal metal structure added for strength. It opens to an empty interior and would require frames and covers if you would like to add photographs or keepsakes.
A wonderfully meaningful Victorian piece with beautiful engraving and history — lovely worn alone or layered with other antique pendants and chains.
